Happy Star Wars Day

4 May 2022

Happy Star Wars Day! We thought we would attribute our five favourite quotes from Star Wars to aspects of Radiation Safety. Do you think any are a bit tenuous?

I am your father!

The Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 secures the health, safety and wellbeing of employees. However, it in itself simply lays down principles for this, and allows the creation of other sets of legislation to be introduced, which can be more specific and place certain duties on employers and employees. For example, the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 (IRR17), the Control of Artificial Optical Radiation at Work Regulations 2010 (AOR10) and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 (MHSW99).

Do or do not, there is no try.

One of the keys to being a successful Radiation Safety role such as a Radiation Protection Supervisor or Laser Safety Officer, is effective record keeping. If records are not kept, then the lack of evidence may lead an inspector to think that the activity is not being done. Records should be kept for a minimum of two years. Here are some examples of activities that need adequate record keeping:

  • Training
  • Safety checks
  • Appointment letters

Help me Obi Wan Kenobi, you’re my only hope.

Every employer engaged in certain work with ionising radiation must consult suitable radiation protection advisers (RPAs). Employers must select suitable RPAs, who have the required knowledge and experience for the employer’s type of work. At Aurora we have highly experienced Radiation Protection Advisers who are dedicated to helping our clients demonstrate compliance with the relevant legislation.

When I left you, I was but the learner. Now I am the master.

During the pandemic, Aurora has invested a huge amount of time and effort into how we deliver radiation safety training. Not only have we been able to provide a suite of courses that can be delivered effectively online, but we also released On-Demand courses, which are engaging, interactive and for course attendees to conduct at their own pace and around their own schedule.

The force will be with you, always.

Aurora offer a comprehensive range of radiation safety services; including cradle-to-grave for ionising radiation facilities, and non-ionising radiation projects. We offer consultancy services, training, radiation surveys, radiation transport modelling and characterisation and disposal of waste.
