Case Study: Radiation Ground Survey and Clearance for Ra-226 Contamination

The Challenge

To identify historic buried radioactive material across an area of rough and broken ground roughly 2.3 hectares in size.

The Tasks

To identify the locations of historic buried radioactive items and contamination. Identify the radionuclide content of any material found through in-field monitoring and the collection of samples for laboratory analysis. Support further site investigations including recovery of any radioactive items found during the works.

The Results

A fully surveyed area identifying buried locations of Ra-226 contamination and trace Co-60 and Cs-137 contamination. Recovery, packaging and disposal of four radioactive items uncovered during further site investigations.
