Lyn started at Aurora as the Office Manager, but as the company has developed over the years, she is now the go to person for all financial matters and works alongside the Finance Director.
Before joining Aurora, Lyn worked for a large company providing finance and office management services for various markets and
so brings to Aurora experience in accounting, payroll and
Human Resourcing.
Lyn’s role does not confine her to just the office and can sometimes be seen out on site providing support to other Aurora Teams members, so she has an excellent understanding of Aurora as a whole.

Steve Bramley
Senior Health Physics Surveyor & Site Manager

Steve joined Aurora in February 2013 after working with the Team as a contractor surveyor for seven years. During this period, Steve has gained experience with many aspects of radiation
protection from surveying to Site Manager having worked on
particle accelerator, cyclotron and synchrotrons decommissioning projects as well as environmental, laboratory and university surveys and land remediation.
Steve is also Aurora’s resident IT expert and has designed, or written a variety of useful computer based tools for Aurora staff to use in the field when carrying out radiological surveys and assessments.

Raj Bunger

Raj joined Aurora in 2006 as a senior RPA, RWA, LPA and NIR Specialist. He provides advice and radiation protection services to a wide variety of clients across all sectors, including advice to corporate clients on how to implement robust radiation protection practices across multiple sites. He also has many years of experience as a project manager for large decommissioning and remediation projects.

Raj is Aurora’s Director for Staff and Service Development; his role includes the development of Aurora’s training services as well as the development of Aurora’s radiation protection professionals.
Raj is a Chartered Radiation Protection Professional and a Fellow of the Society for Radiological Protection (SRP).
Raj has been a key member of Aurora’s NIR Services Team which has led to the development of Aurora’s services in this area. His client base is varied and covers many sectors for both ionising and non-ionising radiation and includes the medical, industrial, academic, research and military sectors.

James Cairns

James joined Aurora in 2011 as a well-respected RPA/RWA offering an invaluable wealth of advice to his clients and the Aurora Team.

After graduating from the University of St Andrews with a BSc (Hons) in Marine Biology and further MScs in Radiation Physics from the University of St Andrews and University of Surrey James went to work as a lecturer at the University of East Anglia before joining AWE at Aldermaston first as a site RPA and then as part of the National Nuclear Security Division.
James has represented the UK government at various law enforcement policy meetings and government to government meetings in regards to radiation protection. He has presented to government experts in France, Germany, Canada, the USA and the IAEA on radiological and environmental monitoring and impacts of naturally occurring radioactive material.
James is considered by the Environment Agency (EA) in England and Northern Ireland, Natural Resources Wales & the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) as a Suitably Qualified Professional for preparing reports on land contaminated with radioactivity under the government Land Contamination: Risk Management (LCRM) procedures.
James is a qualified expert in radiation protection and is appointed as both a Radiation Protection Adviser and Radioactive Waste Adviser as well as being a competency assessor for the awarding body (RPA2000) of these certifications. James is also a Fellow of the Society of Radiological Protection.

Paddy Copeland

Paddy is one of Aurora’s experts in major decommissioning projects and a highly experienced well-respected RPA, RWA and DGSA.

Before joining the Aurora team in 2004 Paddy began his career at the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) undertaking research in the field of nuclear fuel behaviour. Paddy’s research centred on the safety and performance of nuclear fuel in various reactor systems, both civil and military.
After moving into radiation protection in 1999, Paddy has gained a wealth of experience both working on large projects and providing consultancy advice to Clients in many areas of industry including academic, nuclear, industrial, life sciences, environmental/land remediation, defence/aerospace and public sectors.
Paddy has worked on numerous decommissioning and land remediation projects in the UK and overseas both within the nuclear sector and in the wider industrial and public sectors.
Paddy has been involved in the transport of radioactive materials for over 25 years and has been a DGSA since 2005.

Neil Dorling
Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS), Site Manager & Senior Health Physics Surveyor
Neil has 29 years of experience working as a Health Physics Surveyor and is an exceptional site manager and surveyor. Neil joined Aurora in 2008 as a well-respected Health Physics Surveyor. He has become an essential part of the Aurora Team bringing his vast years of experience and knowledge of Health Physics to Aurora.

Neil started his radiation protection career as a Health Physics Surveyor for the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) in 1986.
Throughout his time at UKAEA Neil provided Health Physics support to a variety of facilities on the Harwell Nuclear Licensed Site in Oxfordshire. In 1997 Neil left UKAEA to work for Safeguard International and became their facilities manager at Culham which provided storage, processing and incineration solutions for short lived radionuclides. Since working for Aurora, Neil has continued to develop his Health Physics role and has worked on several large decommissioning projects as Aurora’s Site Manager and expanded into university, pharmaceutical and hospital sectors undertaking surveying and decommissioning to support the surrendering of permits
for clients.

Amy Elliott
Trainee Radiation Protection Adviser and Trainee Laser Protection Adviser

Amy joined Aurora’s team during the COVID-19 pandemic to become a trainee RPA and LPA. She is currently gaining experience in a large variety of sectors providing both ionising and non-ionising radiation safety advice and training. She has conducted surveys for ionising radiation, such as environmental land and life sciences based surveys, as well as surveys of electromagnetic fields in the workplace. Amy’s innovative skills means she is a key member of Aurora’s Training Services Team and has helped launch and further develop Aurora’s online training courses.
After completing an integrated Masters in Physics at Warwick University, Amy started work at the University of Oxford in the Oncology Biophysics core group in 2017. Alongside her Research Assistant job Amy took on the role of Radiation Protection Supervisor, responsible for supervising a wide range of radiation facilities and ensuring legislative compliance.

Dr Joel Garner

Joel studied undergraduate level chemistry at the University of Manchester, during which time he developed an interest in the nuclear industry and radioactive waste storage and treatment. In 2013 Joel began an Aurora sponsored Ph.D. in radiochemistry at Loughborough University. During this time, Joel conducted analysis of naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) produced by the UK’s onshore oil and gas industry and published his work in the journal Minerals, and the Journal of Environmental Radioactivity.
Since 2017, when Joel joined Aurora, he has gained experience delivering radiation protection awareness training and advising clients on the application of UK radiation protection legislation in a range of industrial and research settings. In 2020, Joel designed and delivered Aurora’s first interactive online training course for Radiation Protection Supervisors. Joel has submitted his portfolio of evidence for accreditation which was accepted in September 2022 now making him a certified Radiation Protection Adviser, and on the 1st April 2023 Joel became certified as an Radioactive Waste Adviser. Joel also supports Aurora’s R&D across the company; in particular Joel has been instrumental in the development of Aurora’s radiation walkover survey system, the AuroraRadMap (ARM).

Glenn has been with Aurora since 2003 and is now responsible for the overall performance of Aurora.

Glenn leads teams on major projects involving radiation safety consultancy, radiological surveying and decommissioning. Glenn is a well-respected Aurora “ambassador” across the industry, and is a Fellow of The Society for Radiological Protection (SRP). Glenn’s first involvement with radiation protection started in the late 1980s during his time in the Royal Air Force dealing with radioactive consignments. In 1991 Glenn joined the National Radiological Protection Board before joining AEA Technology in 1998, and then setting up his own radiation protection consultancy business. Glenn is now recognised as one of the UK’s experts in major decommissioning projects, and is an exceptional project manager.

Robert is the Technical Director of Aurora and has been a radiation safety professional addressing both ionising and non-ionising radiations hazards for 30 years, working in the nuclear, industrial, healthcare and research sectors.
Professional
Robert provides bespoke shielding design solutions using Monte Carlo modelling for medical, industrial and high energy research facilities. In his consultancy work Robert specialises in identifying and helping to solve operational radiation safety issues. Robert enjoys working with clients, helping them understand their legal obligations and more importantly explaining what these mean for them and their work in a practical sense. Robert is proud of Aurora’s pragmatic approach, providing on the ground support to clients, enabling them to concentrate on their business function secure in the knowledge
that they are addressing radiological safety in a robust and
defensible manner.
Robert also specialises in non-ionising radiation safety, providing advice on optical radiation (lasers and conventional broadband sources), static electric and magnetic fields and electromagnetic fields and waves. He has acted as an Expert Witness in both ionising and non-ionising legal cases.

Craig joined Aurora in 2012 and is a highly-respected RPA & RWA who has developed his knowledge base to encompass not only working for a large nuclear establishment but also academic and research facilities. Craig is Aurora’s Director for Operations.

After completing a BSc (Hons) in Physics with Astrophysics, Craig went on to undertake an MSc in Radiation & Environmental Protection at the University of Surrey. Prior to working for Aurora, he was the University of Southampton’s RPA & RWA where he experienced new radiation protection challenges in the education and academic sector including: life sciences, medical research, environmental monitoring, X-ray diffraction and civil engineering.
Before working at Southampton, he was employed at the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) as a Trainee RPA where he
gained experience of working in operational manufacturing
facilities, decommissioning radiological facilities and radioactive
waste management.

Jill was Aurora’s first employee and was appointed as a Director early in 2015. She is a well-respected RPA across the medical sector, contributing to the second editions of IPEM Report 75 ‘Design and Shielding of Radiotherapy Facilities’ and of the reference book ‘Practical Radiation Protection in Healthcare’.

Jill has more than twenty years experience across a wide range of work with radiation. She became interested in radiation safety during two summer placements at Sellafield as a sponsored student, and after gaining a BSc(hons) in Physics from Imperial College London, she completed the MoD Graduate training scheme, working as a Health Physicist at Devonport Royal Dockyard for a number of years. She then moved sectors and worked as a Clinical Scientist specialising in radiation protection for Newcastle Hospitals NHS Trust before joining Aurora in 2003.
Jill is one of Aurora’s specialists in Monte Carlo N-Particle eXtended (MCNPX) modelling, which is used for radiation shielding design and other radiation protection problems where empirical calculational methods are not appropriate or available. MCNPX is particularly useful for Proton Beam Therapy and other facilities for which empirical methods are not available or appropriate, for example, high
energy electron beam research, determination of neutron scatter through penetrations or down mazes and assessment of novel shielding materials.

Adam Scott

Adam joined Aurora in May 2019 after working at the Harwell Nuclear Licenced Site for nine years.

After completing a BSc (Hons) in Physics, Adam was sponsored to complete the MSc in Radiation & Environmental Protection at the University of Surrey. After completing his MSc Adam started work at the Harwell Nuclear Licenced site. He was awarded his RPA certificate in 2015 and gained experience as RPA at Harwell for a variety
of projects including decommissioning, land remediation, and
waste processing.
Since joining Aurora Adam has provided RPA support across range of sectors including security, pharmaceuticals, research while continuing to work with clients in the nuclear sector. Adam has also gained experience with project management and has successfully led radiological remediation projects allowing previously contaminated sites to be redeveloped.

Lindsey Simcox
Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA) & Laser Protection Adviser (LPA)
Lindsey provides both ionising and non-ionising radiation (NIR) protection services to Aurora’s clients.
After completing an undergraduate degree in Physics with Astrophysics and a MSc in Radiation and Environmental Protection, Lindsey joined Aurora in 2010 and soon became a certificated LPA and RPA. She routinely provides radiation safety advice to clients across many sectors who have a variety of ionising and non-ionising safety requirements, from large organisations to small users.
Lindsey has worked with a number of organisations at the Corporate level providing RPA and LPA advice, which has enabled them to implement improvements across a number of sites. This has included innovative R&D companies who develop world leading products, and hospitals managing laser safety across many disciplines. This advice has included the production of policies and protocols and then conducing audits to assess how clients comply with the legal requirements.
Lindsey is one of Aurora’s Training Experts and excels in the delivery of training courses to clients. She is a key member of Aurora’s Training Services Team and has created radiation protection training courses that can be delivered both face-to-face and online.
Lindsey is a member of The Society for Radiological Protection (SRP) and has worked with the Society for many years to support those in the early stages of their career in radiation protection, including being the Chairperson of the Rising Generations Group for three years. In 2017 she was awarded the Society’s Founders Medal for this work. Lindsey has presented at a number of conferences and events, both nationally and internationally. This included a presentation on the analysis of Marie Curie’s notebook to ensure suitable radiation protection for its readers at an archive in London.

Emma Solomon
Office Administrator
Emma has been with Aurora since 2007, and is an integral part of the team ensuring the smooth running of the Aurora office.

Emma supports the Technical Director with all things Quality, Environmental, Health and Safety (QEHS) along with proving Laboratory support for major projects requiring radiological sampling.
Emma’s first involvement with radiation protection was in 2005 working for Safeguard International and helping the Collections Department plan and collect sources as part of the Environment Agency School, College & University source amnesty.
Prior to undertaking the QEHS support role, Emma worked on several major decommissioning projects requiring radiological surveying, sampling, remediation and decommissioning thus providing her with on-site work experience also.

Jon has been a Certificated Radiation Protection Adviser since 2003 and has worked for Aurora since 2005. He is a highly respected RPA with a vast amount of experience within the nuclear and non-nuclear sectors.

Jon has an academic background as a physicist and worked with nuclear submarines at Devonport dockyard and other MoD bases from 1993 to 2000. Then, before joining Aurora, he worked at the Nuclear Department of the MoD Defence Engineering College teaching military and civilian staff.
Jon is recognised as one of the UK’s experts in radiological surveying and land remediation and is the Aurora lead for contaminated land projects. He has been the project manager for several radiation survey, decommissioning and remediation projects on MoD, nuclear, research and pharmaceutical sites. Jon also works on the design and delivery of radiation protection training courses for new and experienced workers with ionising radiation, including bespoke courses for particular competencies such as working with tritium or shielding design.

Paul joined Aurora as a Health Physics Surveyor and RPS in 2010 and is an integral part of the Aurora Team.

Paul has 32 years of experience in the Nuclear Industry, 23 of which were spent working for the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) at the Winfrith site in Dorset. While at Winfrith, Paul’s roles included Post Irradiation Examination (PIE) operative, Health Physics Surveyor and Lead Waste Assessor. Since working for Aurora, Paul has continued to develop his Health Physics role and has worked on a variety of decommissioning, remediation, demolition and environmental surveying and sampling projects as Aurora’s Site Manager

Angela Yeadon
Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA), Radioactive Waste Adviser (RWA), Laser Protection Adviser (LPA) and Non-Ionising Radiation (NIR) Specialist
Angela is a highly experienced radiation protection specialist and joined Aurora in 2015. She provides ionising and non-ionising radiation protection services to clients across many sectors and is especially adept at carrying out safety assessments for electromagnetic fields and optical radiation.

Angela is considered by the Environment Agency (EA) in England and Northern Ireland, Natural Resources Wales & the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) as a Suitably Qualified Professional for preparing reports on land contaminated with radioactivity under the government Land Contamination: Risk Management (LCRM) procedures.
After completing a MPhys (Hons) in Physics in 2005, Angela joined Public Health England, where she gained many years’ experience working as an ionising and non-ionising radiation safety specialist.
Angela has worked as an integral part of the Aurora Team on a number of large projects. She routinely provides radiation safety advice to clients, particularly in the university, research and medical sectors, who have a variety of ionising and non-ionising safety issues. She is a member of SRP’s EMF and Optical Radiation (EMFOR) Committee, which acts as a focal point for NIR safety related issues within the
SRP community.

Angela is married to Craig. In her spare time, she enjoys walking and cycling along the Northumberland coast, going to the theatre, seeing live music and playing on the piano and guitar.

Colin Williams
Radiation Protection Technician

Colin joined Aurora in 2022 as a Radiation Protection Technician after a varied career which has included work in the construction industry and as a laboratory technician. Since joining Aurora Colin has been learning quickly and has gotten involved in a range of project’s including radiological remediation of a contaminated laboratory, a post operational radiological survey within a hospital’s nuclear medicine department and a radiation walkover survey of a site historically used for nuclear research.

Charlie Scholtka
Trainee Radiation Protection Adviser and Laser Protection Adviser

Charlie joined Aurora in 2023 after completing an MEng in Nuclear Engineering at the University of Birmingham, part of which included conducting laboratory experiments in gamma attenuation for a variety of shielding materials.
Charlie is currently gaining experience as part of his development as an RPA/LPA and is also supporting projects conducted by Aurora’s Site Services Team.

Orneste Buitkute
Trainee Radiation Protection Adviser and Trainee Laser Protection Adviser
Professional
Orneste is a Trainee Radiation Protection Adviser and Trainee Laser Protection Adviser at Aurora. With a background in Physics, Mathematics and Interdisciplinary Sciences, Orneste has experience with laser work environment, non-ionising radiation and electromagnetic shielding while building a 3-D super-resolution microscope at the University of Birmingham Medical School laboratory. She is currently gaining experience as part of her development and is supporting Aurora’s Site Services Team on different projects.
