Electromagnetic and radiofrequency fields and waves cover a host of uses, which vary depending on the frequency of the fields and waves produced.

Low frequency fields can be produced by power generation, electronic surveillance, industrial heating process (i.e. RF induction heaters, welders and furnaces).

Medium to high frequency fields and waves can be created and used to transmit signals for communications and commercial purposes, such as radio/TV, mobile phones, wireless networks, radars and satellites.

Electromagnetic fields and waves can also be used for medical purposes such as diathermy and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).

Assessing exposures to electromagnetic fields and waves is complex and requires specialist instrumentation, calibrated for the relevant frequencies for which measurements are being made. Exposures can also be estimated using theoretical modelling. Complexities in assessments arise as a result of how different frequency fields and waves interact with the body.

On 1st July 2016 The Control of Electromagnetic Fields at Work Regulations 2016 came into force in the UK. These regulations require employers to assess the risks posed to staff and others from exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF) in the workplace. They require that where staff and others may be exposed to levels of EMF that exceed specific thresholds, the employer must implement appropriate control measures reduce exposure. The employer must take into account the risks to workers at particular risk, such as expectant mothers and workers with active or passive implanted or body worn medical devices (e.g. pacemakers).
