Changes to the Radiation Protection Legislation

This Aurora Expert Event will provide an update on recent and forthcoming changes to legislation covering radiation safety. The event will bring together experts in the field, including Regulators, Advisers, and Users, to share their knowledge and experience in implementing the requirements of current Regulations and in preparing for changes in legislation. This day is perfect for those who have responsibility within their organisation for managing both ionising and non-ionising radiation safety.

Radiation safety legislation in the UK is going through a period of change in order to incorporate new requirements in updated European Directives. This event will see 90 delegates meeting at Harwell in November 2017 to discuss this.

Ionising radiation

Following the adoption of the Basic Safety Standards (BSS) Directive (2013/59/Euratom), in December 2013, UK legislation covering ionising radiation safety is in the process of being updated. New regulations will come into force in 2018. We have invited speakers from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) and the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA), as well as radiation users, to explain how these changes may affect your organisation.

Non-ionising radiation

In 2016, the Control of Electromagnetic Fields at Work Regulations 2016 (CEMFWR16) came into force. Employers are now specifically required to ensure exposure to electromagnetic fields is below regulatory limits and that employees at particular risk are adequately protected. We have invited speakers who have been involved in carrying out exposure assessments and implementing EMF safety management arrangements in their own organisation, to explain what the requirements are and give practical examples of how to protect employees.
