On 4^th November four members of the Aurora Team attended the National Radon Forum at the UKHSA in Chilton, Harwell. The annual event is a chance to discuss and debate topics relating to radon across all sectors. This year saw talks from a range of presenters including the National Trust, the Radon Council, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), British Geological Survey, UKHSA, the UK Radon Association and Better Indoors.

Aurora’s Adam Scott also gave a talk, the aim of which was to challenge the HSE’s position on the application of the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 (IRR17) post-mitigation. The HSE’s current policy is that even once mitigation has successfully reduced radon concentrations to below the 300 Bq/m³ application level IRR17 must still be applied. Aurora feels that this directly contradicts the wording in regulation 3 of IRR17 and is of the opinion that management of radon post-mitigation is better handled through application of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 and the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974. Continued application of IRR17 brings around a range of issues such as the potential to exceed dose limits at radon concentrations as low as 40 Bq/m³ (e.g. in prisons and care homes).

The event was a great opportunity for members of the community to get together and promote radon safety. The UK Radon Association highlighted that it has written an open letter to the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Rt Hon Wes Streeting MP to urge the Department of Health and Social Care to implement three key actions to improve awareness of radon in schools, nurseries and health services.
