Aurora provided a shielding design for two 15 MV clinical accelerators, using Monte Carlo modelling techniques, and provided detailed radiation safety advice to satisfy regulatory and end user requirements.
The Background
Aurora has unrivalled experience in designing installed shielding for many uses of ionising radiation, including high energy Proton Beam Therapy facilities, linear accelerators, X-ray rooms and industrial radiography enclosures. Aurora’s established and dedicated expertise in Monte Carlo modelling techniques allows the design of complex facilities and investigations into activation of construction materials.
The Challenges
To provide a shielding design for two 15 MV clinical accelerators within a limited footprint, involving high energy photons and neutrons.
The Tasks
- Carry out Monte Carlo modelling to assess the effectiveness of different shielding materials and maze configurations.
- Provide detailed advice on engineering controls and safety features to satisfy regulatory and end user requirements.
The Results
On completion of the construction of the shielded parts of a facility, Aurora is able to offer a shielding integrity testing service. This gives peace of mind prior to the final finishes being applied and the intended radiation source being installed.
“The project was delivered on time, within budget and to the satisfaction of our client, which is testament to Aurora who worked seamlessly as part of the project team. I would happily recommend the services of Aurora.”
