Case Study

Laboratory of Molecular Biology

Radiological surveys and decommissioning activities were undertaken by Aurora at the Laboratory of Molecular Biology.

Remediation & Decommissioning

The Challenges

To perform an independent radiological survey and undertake decommissioning activities at the Laboratory of Molecular Biology in order to: leave the facility with no radiological restrictions, clear all remaining chemical reagents, remove unwanted equipment and furniture, and clean the empty rooms.

The Tasks

  • Carry out an initial radiological survey and sampling of all laboratories, offices, ventilation and drainage systems.
  • The reuse/recycling of unwanted laboratory chemical reagents, equipment and furnature
  • Final radiological survey and report providing reassurance for MRC, stakeholders and regulators, demonstrating radiological endpoints have been met.
  • Interpretation of survey results to ensure suitable decommissioning documentation, including waste management plans.
  • Radiation Protection Adviser, Radioactive Waste Adviser, and Health Physics Support at all stages of decommissioning, characterisation and segregation, transport and disposal of radioactive waste.

The Results

The Laboratory of Molecular Biology was successfully radiologically surveyed, decommissioned and emptied to leave the facility free from any radiological restrictions and handed back to MRC.

The MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge recently moved to a new premises leaving a 50 year building to be decommissioned and returned back to a clean radiological, chemical, biological, equipment and furniture free situation.

Aurora worked tirelessly to carry out radiological monitoring, surveying, sampling and subsequent decommissioning. I would have no hesitation in recommending Aurora’s Radiological & Decommissioning Team for laboratories requiring a similar service.
